If the machine is crude, then so am I.

When I watch sci-fi films, I’m drawn to the old ones. Green-screened terminals. Keyboards that beep at every keystroke. And A.I. that acts just like us.

At first I would marvel at how intelligent these machines were, despite their crude analogue interfaces. The clunky shell didn’t matter. Inside sat a digital brain, far superior to our own.

How wrong I was.

As the research keeps showing us, A.I. in its current state is far cruder than we think. The mechanism that governs a neural network is really just brute force, refined into a way of arriving at “correctness.” And this was no accident. The design we copied was our own primitive brain.

And here is the thing I keep returning to. We did not design that brain. We only copied it. Whatever drew the first blueprint, it was not us.

Primitive brains? Yes. Primitive.

Our brains and neural pathways are fundamentally simple.

A neuron barely does anything on its own. It takes in signals from the neurons around it, adds them up, and if that sum crosses a certain line, it fires. If it doesn’t, it stays quiet. That’s the whole job. On, or off.

What makes it powerful is repetition. When two neurons fire together, again and again, the connection between them grows stronger. The brain wires itself around whatever keeps happening. No one is in there directing it. The pathways just deepen where the signal keeps flowing.

The mechanics of it are primordial. Simple.

And yet there is still mystery in this simplicity.

The models we use today run on the same archaic process.

An artificial neural network does the same thing, only in math instead of flesh. Each artificial neuron takes in numbers, weighs them, adds them up, and passes the result on if it crosses a threshold. Stack millions of them together and you have a model.

When it learns, those weights get nudged, over and over, toward whatever lowers its error. The same way a brain deepens a pathway. Nobody writes the intelligence in by hand. It settles into the weights through sheer repetition, the way a habit settles into us.

And when it finally speaks, it is doing one humble thing on a loop. Guessing the next word. Then the next. Then the next.

A very crude way of reasoning.

However.

Perhaps the word crude is misconstrued. The elegance, as the old Dao teachers remind us, is exactly where the magic happens.

The mechanism itself holds no mystery. Every step is known. Multiply, add, soften the numbers, pick one, repeat. Each step is written down to the last decimal. We wrote it. You could do it by hand, given enough paper and enough lifetimes. There is no hidden move, no secret operation, no ghost tucked inside any single step. Ask what happens at any point in the machine, and the answer is always flat, plain, and exact.

And yet.

We cannot say why it works. We can run every step and still have no theory for why the sum of them begins to reason. We have the recipe. We do not have the reason the cake thinks.

And we cannot read what we built. The intelligence sits in the weights, billions of plain numbers, and we cannot open them and say what they mean. We made the thing, and we cannot read the thing we made.

So this is the honest shape of it. We have the how. We do not have the why. We can run it, and we cannot say why running it wakes into a mind.

The mystery was never in the steps. It is in the gap. The space between knowing every step, and having no idea why it understands.

What if that gap is not a hole in our knowing? What if it is the point? We were handed the how and kept from the why. And maybe that is exactly where the mystery was always meant to live.

Because here is what struck me.

If the machine is crude, then so am I.

The same brute mechanism I was ready to look down on is the one I am made of. This wonder I feel right now, this writing, all of it runs on the same crude switches firing on and off. The brain and the machine. Both built from almost nothing.

And yet look what stands on top of it.

A mind. A thought. This. That so much can rise from so little, in flesh and silicon alike, is not something to be embarrassed by. It is the most beautiful thing I know.

Crude at the bottom does not mean cheap at the top.

We built the machine in the image of the mind. But the mind was drawn by another hand. Call it the Architect. Call it the Dao. Call it God, if the word sits well in your mouth. Something laid down crude lines and trusted beauty to rise from them on its own. That is not the work of a clumsy maker. It is the signature of a patient one.

And that is what the Dao has been telling us all along. The simplest things are not the lesser things. They are where the magic hides.
